I am a Community Paediatrician who has specialised in developmental disorders of children and young people. I am motivated by the question of how to achieve the best outcomes for children and youth who have these challenges, both in the short and long term.

Training

Following medical and paediatric training in Sydney, I undertook further specialist training in the US. This was a Fellowship program in developmental paediatrics at the Boston Children’s Hospital. Whilst there I also completed a Masters in Public Health at Harvard University.

After returning to Australia, I completed a PhD at the University of Queensland.

I have undertaken a Churchill Fellowship, comparing developmental paediatric services in different countries.

Work history

Following my Fellowship program, I returned to a position as developmental paediatrician and Team Leader in Newcastle, NSW. I moved to Queensland to take up the Team Leader position for the Child Development Services at the Children’s Hospital, Brisbane.

In 2001 I moved into private practice, setting up the Child Development Network, a private multidisciplinary service. We left Brisbane for family reasons. Developmental Medicine Consulting is a small Sydney practice enabling us to continue our work in this field.

Other activities

ASDP: With Dr Lesslie and others, we founded the ASDP (Australasian Society for Developmental Paediatrics, formerly Neurodevelopmental and Behavioural Paediatric Society of Australasia) in 2012. This is an international society for doctors who work in this area of clinical practice.

I was the Foundation President, and continue to take an active role in this society.

RACP: Prior to the NBPSA I have been involved with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, both in the formation of our specialist program in Community Paediatrics, and in the running of the Chapter of Community Child Health.

University of QLD: I maintain an appointment at the University of Queensland (Associate Professor), and have published on topics related to developmental paediatrics. The most recent publications were co-authored with Dr Lesslie.
